Camel Group announced that its 12V sodium-ion battery business has been included in a pre-development project by a leading European automaker. The company did not disclose the customer’s name, order volume, or vehicle integration timeline. Camel Group has already completed engineering samples of cylindrical sodium-ion cells and possesses small-scale production capabilities. This project focuses on 12V low-voltage battery applications, which power critical functions such as vehicle controller wake-up, door locks, lighting, emergency communications, and various safety systems. With over four decades of experience in low-voltage batteries, Camel Group offers a comprehensive product portfolio covering lead-acid, EFB, AGM, 12V lithium-ion, and 12V sodium-ion batteries, and has previously supplied 12V lithium-ion products to European automakers. Additionally, the company is the primary proposer of the international standard proposal “12V Sodium-Ion Batteries for Automotive Start-Stop Applications,” which has passed the IEC/TC21 vote and entered the formal standardization process. Key challenges remain before commercialization, including validation of high- and low-temperature power performance, post-vibration and collision safety, vehicle static power consumption, lifetime cost stability compared to AGM or lithium-ion solutions, manufacturing consistency at scale, and recyclability. The project will only translate into tangible supply chain growth after securing official nomination from the European customer, along with confirmation of specific vehicle models and mass production timelines.
