Thailand's July Auto Sales Surge 20% Year-on-Year as Production and Exports Rebound

Thailand's domestic auto sales reached 59,196 units in July, up 20% year-on-year. Vehicle production totaled 117,383 units, an increase of 6.1% year-on-year, ending a consecutive decline that had persisted since March. Of the total output, 72,679 units—approximately 62%—were exported, driving a 2.4% year-on-year growth in auto exports for the month and reversing the 7.5% year-on-year decline recorded in June. From January to July this year, cumulative electric vehicle (EV) sales in Thailand reached 125,411 units, while domestic EV production during the same period amounted to only 46,924 units. The pickup truck segment remained weak, weighed down by tighter credit conditions and sluggish rural household incomes. A spokesperson for the Automotive Industry Club under the Federation of Thai Industries noted that although sales have risen for five consecutive months and July’s growth marked the strongest since January, monthly sales volumes still remain below the pre-pandemic norm of 80,000–100,000 units. Industry experts pointed out that high household debt levels and macroeconomic uncertainty have led banks to maintain stringent lending standards, hindering a full market recovery.
