Recently, the Tianmu Mountain Laboratory and a research team from Tsinghua University have made progress in electrolyte regulation for lithium metal batteries, successfully developing a high-stability lithium metal pouch battery with an energy density reaching the 600 Wh/kg level. When paired with a high-nickel ternary cathode, the 10 Ah pouch cell achieves an energy density of 550.7 Wh/kg and retains 80% of its capacity after 180 cycles. When combined with a lithium-rich manganese-based cathode material, the reversible specific energy increases to 602.5 Wh/kg. The research team developed a novel electrolyte additive that forms a protective layer on the cathode surface to mitigate damage from high-voltage cycling and constructs a stable interfacial layer on the lithium metal anode to suppress lithium dendrite formation. The technology remains at the laboratory research and development stage and has not yet been commercialized at scale.
