BYD Unveils Midsize Plug-in Hybrid Pickup Mako in Brazil, Priced at R$200,000–220,000, Launching in September

On August 27, BYD launched the Mako—a midsize plug-in hybrid pickup named after the shortfin mako shark—in the Brazilian market. Developed on the Song PLUS platform, the Mako is scheduled to go on sale in September with a price range of BRL 200,000 to 220,000 (approximately RMB 260,000 to 290,000). The Mako’s exterior design carries over styling cues from the Song PLUS, featuring a large front grille, full-width LED taillights, black protective cladding, and 18-inch black alloy wheels. It comes standard with a tow hook. Inside, the cabin mirrors the Song PLUS layout, equipped with a fully digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch floating central touchscreen running BYD’s DiLink 100 intelligent infotainment system. Powering the Mako is BYD’s fifth-generation DM plug-in hybrid system, combining a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a 12.9 kWh battery pack. The system delivers a combined output of 166 kW and is paired with a DHT hybrid transmission. The initial launch model features front-wheel drive, while an all-wheel-drive variant is currently under development. Notably, the powertrain is compatible with ethanol fuel, aligning with Brazil’s energy infrastructure. The Mako employs a unibody chassis with a MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. Its springs and shock absorbers have been reinforced to balance SUV-like ride comfort with light-duty cargo capability.
