On August 27, a set of spy photos showing the BMW iX5 M undergoing road testing was released to the public. The new model is scheduled to debut in 2027 and will serve as the flagship of BMW’s all-electric high-performance SUV lineup. Unlike its predecessor—the combustion-engine X5 M, which featured a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine and quad exhaust tips—the iX5 M will fully transition to an all-electric powertrain. The test vehicle’s front fascia clearly differs from that of the standard iX5: while the regular version uses slim kidney grilles, the iX5 M adopts wider and flatter grilles. The glass panel area housing the grille appears lower in height, and the headlights are expected to be even narrower, featuring exclusive lighting signatures. In terms of performance, the iX5 M is expected to be equipped with a four-motor system—an upgrade over the standard iX5’s dual-motor setup. This four-motor architecture was previously used in BMW M’s all-electric M3 development project and enables independent, continuous torque vectoring at each wheel. The battery capacity is anticipated to be similar to that of the standard iX5, reaching up to 141 kWh, with a peak charging rate of 460 kW. Due to the added weight of the four-motor system, wider tires, and performance-oriented tuning, the iX5 M’s range is expected to fall short of the standard iX5’s approximately 845 km (WLTP), though it should still exceed 640 km. BMW has not yet announced an official launch date. The current test mule still wears provisional lighting units, wheels, and bumpers, suggesting the production model’s final design may not be revealed for several more months. Pricing-wise, the iX5 M is expected to start above £100,000 (approximately RMB 916,000).
