From January to July 2026, China's automotive industry generated revenue of RMB 6,078 billion, up 2.7% year-on-year; incurred costs of RMB 5,405.8 billion, up 3.8% year-on-year; and recorded profits of RMB 216.2 billion, down 20% year-on-year. The industry’s sales profit margin stood at 3.6%. During the same period, automobile production totaled 17.61 million units, down 3% year-on-year, including 8.95 million new energy vehicles (NEVs), up 10% year-on-year, accounting for a penetration rate of 51%; conventional fuel vehicle production reached 8.67 million units, down 14% year-on-year. In July 2026 alone, the automotive industry reported revenue of RMB 888.7 billion, up 8.3% year-on-year; costs of RMB 795.7 billion, up 10% year-on-year; and profits of RMB 20.9 billion, down 28% year-on-year, resulting in a monthly profit margin of 2.4%. Automobile production in July totaled 2.53 million units, flat compared to the same period last year. NEV production reached 1.55 million units, up 30% year-on-year, with a penetration rate of 61%, while fuel vehicle production amounted to 980,000 units, down 27% year-on-year. Looking at per-vehicle economic indicators across the industrial chain, from January to July 2026, the automotive industry achieved average revenue per vehicle of RMB 345,000, up 5.3% year-on-year; average cost per vehicle of RMB 307,000, up 6.5% year-on-year; average taxes and fees per vehicle of RMB 26,000, up 6.3% year-on-year; and average gross profit per vehicle of RMB 12,000, down 19% year-on-year. In the first half of 2026, among the top ten most profitable sectors in China’s large-scale industrial enterprises, the automotive manufacturing sector saw its profits decline by 21% year-on-year. In July 2026 alone, automotive manufacturing profits fell by 29% year-on-year.
