Lucid Recalls 27,185 Lucid Air Vehicles Over Software Flaw That Could Cause Fire

Lucid has announced a recall of 27,185 Lucid Air luxury electric sedans, covering model years 2022 through 2026 produced between October 2021 and July 2026. The recall stems from a software defect in the electrical protection system for the vehicle’s exterior lighting circuits. When running outdated software, certain lighting circuits may remain energized and subjected to excessive current, potentially causing components to overheat—severe cases could result in smoke or even fire. The issue arises because the software controlling the electronic fuse (eFuse) fails to promptly cut power to faulty circuits. Beyond fire risk, overheating may also cause failure of the center high-mounted stop lamp (CHMSL) or front lighting systems, reducing vehicle visibility and increasing collision risk. Lucid reports that over the past three years, it has recorded three fire incidents linked to the front lighting system, received four reports of CHMSL circuit overheating accompanied by smoke, and logged 33 warranty claims related to damage to the CHMSL wiring harness. The company deployed an over-the-air (OTA) software update—version 2.10.0—in July 2024, which lowers the eFuse protection threshold and prevents a faulty circuit from repeatedly re-energizing within the same ignition cycle. As of the preparation of the recall report, 20,719 affected vehicles have already received the update, leaving 6,466 still pending. Owners of vehicles not yet updated will receive notification by mail, with official remedy notices expected to be issued on October 16. Lucid advises affected owners to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until the update is completed. No service center visit is required for this repair.
