Recently, the Debian community held a vote on the use of large language models. The vote employed the Condorcet method and presented nine options, ranging from a complete ban to allowing AI use under specific conditions. The fifth option, "Responsible Use of Generative AI," emerged as the winner. Under the new policy, Debian does not prohibit the use of generative AI in software development and documentation processes. The policy states that, when used responsibly, AI can enhance development efficiency, enabling developers to focus more energy on other tasks. However, all AI-assisted code and documentation must meet quality standards and legal compliance requirements, with ultimate responsibility resting with human developers. Debian will not mandate contributors to disclose whether AI was used in their code. Although the project encourages such transparency, it is not required as a condition for contributions. This policy aims to strike a balance between leveraging AI technology and upholding developer accountability, supporting the community’s sustainable development.
