BYD plans to apply the technology used in its Japan-launched mini battery electric vehicle (BEV), the "Racco," to the development of compact EVs for global markets, including Europe. The company introduced the Racco—a Kei car specifically designed for the Japanese market—in late July 2024 and has recently decided to utilize its newly developed proprietary battery pack, the "X-PACK,"—debuted on the Racco—for future compact EV models. The Racco starts at ¥2,145,000 (approximately RMB 90,206) before taxes and qualifies for a Japanese government subsidy of ¥150,000 (approximately RMB 6,308). Measuring 3,395 mm in length and 1,475 mm in width, it complies with Japan’s Kei car dimensional regulations, while standing 1,800 mm tall. Notably, it features power-operated sliding doors, making it the first Kei-class BEV in Japan to offer this configuration. The base model comes with a 22.4 kWh battery, delivering a WLTC-rated range of 210 km, while the higher-spec variant is equipped with a 35.84 kWh battery, achieving a WLTC range of 320 km—marking it as Japan’s first Kei BEV to exceed the 300 km range threshold. Additionally, BYD aims to expand its Japanese dealership network from approximately 80 outlets currently to 100 by the end of 2026, and further to 120 by the end of 2027.
