GM Files Patent for Multi-Function Rear Armrest

General Motors filed a patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on January 24, 2025, for a multifunctional rear-seat armrest for vehicles, published as US 2026/0217173 A1 on July 30, 2026. The invention was jointly developed by four Korean engineers: Taekgeun Lee, Minsu Lee, Seokju Yong, and Ilmin Hong. Designed specifically for vehicles equipped with rear bench seats, the armrest connects to the seat back via a pivot joint, allowing it to fold and stow into a recess in the seat back. When in use, it can be lowered to cover the center seat cushion and locked at multiple angles between fully upright and fully down positions. Inside the armrest resides a concealed, retractable panel that slides laterally from both sides along a rail system, covering either the left or right passenger’s seat cushion and leg area. The rails enable the panel to be secured at any position—fully stowed, fully extended, or anywhere in between. The patent outlines two design configurations: a single-panel structure and a dual-panel structure. In the latter, the two panels stack when stowed; during deployment, the upper panel rotates around a hinge to align side-by-side with the lower panel, forming a larger horizontal surface. The lower panel can extend toward the vehicle’s side or forward, depending on hinge placement, and its pivot mechanism locks the panel in place when under load. Additionally, the armrest features a storage compartment beneath the hinge cover and offers an optional tray section, enabling multiple functionalities without requiring separate components installed elsewhere in the cabin. This expandable platform can accommodate laptops, tablets, or smartphones.
