On the evening of Sunday, August 31 local time, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system will soon gain the ability to automatically avoid potholes on roads. This feature has been included in the FSD v14 release notes as an upcoming enhancement. Currently, FSD can already detect and avoid road obstacles such as cardboard boxes, horse manure, and vehicle parts, but it still struggles with identifying potholes and sudden changes in road layout. Musk first mentioned plans to develop this capability in April 2019 in response to a customer suggestion, and in August 2020 revealed that Tesla was annotating data related to road bumps and potholes to enable automatic slowing down or maneuvering around them. Additionally, Tesla plans to unveil its Cybercab this Thursday.
