On September 3, at the 2026 World Power Battery Conference, an official from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology stated that China has established a globally leading power battery industry system. The country’s power battery installations in vehicles surged more than tenfold in 2025 compared to 2020, and from January to July 2026 alone, reached 41.02 gigawatt-hours (GWh). China has built a comprehensive industrial chain covering fundamental materials, cell manufacturing, system integration, complete equipment, and recycling. It is also advancing development across multiple technological pathways, including liquid lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and hybrid solid-liquid batteries. In 2026, overseas exports of power batteries have significantly outpaced domestic market growth, marking a deep phase of internationalization characterized by capacity deployment abroad as well as the export of technology and standards. Moving forward, China will refine technical standards, testing and certification protocols, and recycling policies for power batteries, regulate market competition, and promote integrated development among new energy vehicles, energy systems, transportation, and smart infrastructure. According to previously released data, during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025), annual sales of new energy vehicles in China rose from 1.367 million to 16.49 million units, with their share of total new vehicle sales increasing from 5.4% to 47.9%. China now accounts for over 70% of global production of new energy vehicles, power batteries, and key materials, with products exported to more than 100 countries and regions.
