Sodium-ion Batteries Get Dedicated Customs Tariff Code Starting September 1

General Administration of Customs Announcement No. 126 of 2026 clarifies that, effective September 1, sodium-ion batteries will be assigned their own independent HS code: 8507809010. Previously, sodium batteries were classified under the category "other storage batteries" for import and export declarations, leading to ambiguous customs classification, distorted statistical data, and risks related to consumption tax administration and trade compliance. Under current policy, sodium batteries are eligible for a consumption tax exemption until the end of 2028, and the dedicated tariff code will help clarify classification and support the implementation of this tax exemption. However, enterprises must comply with national standards and provide compliant test reports to qualify for the consumption tax exemption. The new code will facilitate accurate tracking of sodium battery import/export statistics and enable customs authorities to clearly differentiate sodium batteries from lithium-ion batteries. Industry experts note that the dedicated tariff code marks sodium batteries’ entry into a standardized phase of international trade, though overseas certification and mutual recognition of international standards remain key challenges for global market access.
