At the 2026 World Battery Conference – Advanced Battery Forward-Looking Technologies Session, Wang Fang, Chief Scientist at China Automotive Technology & Research Center Co., Ltd., announced that three national standards for solid-state batteries used in electric vehicles—covering performance specifications, safety requirements, and lifetime specifications—have been officially initiated and are expected to release draft versions for public comment by the end of 2024. Previously, the national standard "Solid-State Batteries for Electric Vehicles – Part 1: Terminology and Classification" had already been published. This series of standards comprises four parts in total: terminology and classification, performance specifications, safety requirements, and lifetime specifications. According to the published terminology and classification standard, batteries are categorized based on the type of electrolyte facilitating ion transport between the positive and negative electrodes into liquid batteries, hybrid solid-liquid batteries, and solid-state batteries. Specifically, liquid batteries use liquid electrolytes; hybrid solid-liquid batteries employ both liquid and solid electrolytes; and solid-state batteries exclusively use solid electrolytes. The standard’s drafting notes clarify that “semi-solid-state battery” is an acceptable term for “hybrid solid-liquid battery,” while “all-solid-state battery” is an acceptable term for “solid-state battery.” Additionally, in August 2024, a Chinese-proposed international standard proposal titled "Secondary Lithium-Ion Batteries for Electric Vehicle Propulsion – Guidelines, Test Items, and Conditions for Solid-State Batteries" was successfully approved for development by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), becoming the world’s first international standard in the field of solid-state batteries.
