Lei Jun: Extended-Range EVs Hold Great Promise; Xiaomi Pengcheng Launches Sept. 7

On September 6, Lei Jun, founder, chairman, and CEO of Xiaomi, stated that neither extended-range nor pure electric vehicle technologies is inherently superior—the key lies in the user experience. He announced that Xiaomi’s extended-range vehicle, the "Xiaomi Pengcheng," developed over three and a half years, will officially launch on September 7 at 7 p.m. Built on a native extended-range platform, the Pengcheng achieves a maximum CLTC all-electric range of 505 km (N70 Max) and a combined range of up to 1,705 km (N90 Max). It runs on 92-octane gasoline and demonstrates over 99% success rate in public charging compatibility tests. Lei emphasized that the Pengcheng addresses common pain points of traditional extended-range vehicles in terms of space utilization, energy efficiency, and cabin quietness. For instance, the N70 Pro model delivers a low fuel consumption of just 5.7 L/100 km under depleted-battery conditions, with the range extender’s operational noise measuring less than 1 decibel. Additionally, after the initial service, maintenance is required only once every three years or 30,000 kilometers. The same launch event will also unveil the Xiaomi 18 Fold, a mid-fold smartphone powered by Xiaomi’s self-developed Xuanjie O3 chip, and the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max tablet. Lei Jun expects the entire presentation to last no more than 2 hours and 45 minutes.
