2026 World Power Battery Conference Unveils Major Breakthroughs in Battery Technology

The 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Battery Conference was held in Yibin City, Sichuan Province, from September 3 to 4. At the event, Academician Ouyang Minggao unveiled several major breakthroughs in battery technology: - Ultra-fast charging battery technology enables safe recharging in approximately ten minutes; - High-specific-energy hybrid solid-liquid battery technology has achieved mass production of high-safety batteries with an energy density of 350 Wh/kg; - Long-life battery technology for battery-swapping passenger vehicles addresses capacity degradation during extended service life; - Large-capacity, high-safety energy storage battery technology has doubled individual cell capacity from 300 Ah to 600 Ah and is already in mass production; - Fourth-generation high-density lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode material technology has pushed LFP battery specific energy beyond 200 Wh/kg; - All-climate thermal management technology for passenger vehicle batteries resolves slow charging in cold temperatures and overheating during charging in hot conditions; - Next-generation high-speed winding technology for prismatic cells has increased production efficiency from 4.4 to 7.5 cells per minute. Additionally, the conference introduced a comprehensive battery safety technology framework supporting China’s mandatory national battery safety standard, which took effect on July 1, 2024. Since its inaugural edition in Sichuan in 2022, the World New Energy Vehicle Battery Conference has been held four consecutive times, attracting over 1,100 key enterprises and nearly 7,000 distinguished guests. The event has showcased nearly 700 new technologies and products and facilitated the signing of more than 400 major projects with a total investment of approximately RMB 380 billion. This year’s conference featured over 120 leading domestic and international companies, including Tesla, CATL, and BYD. According to the Yibin Municipal Bureau of Commerce, Yibin is known as “China’s Capital of Power Batteries,” producing one out of every ten lithium-ion power batteries globally. CATL has already built a 270 GWh production capacity in Yibin, with an additional 80 GWh under construction and nearing commissioning.
