Toyota Unveils Mid-Cycle Update for 16th-Gen Crown with Fifth-Gen THS Hybrid System

Toyota has recently released official images of the mid-cycle refresh for the sixteenth-generation Crown family. The updated models feature the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS), along with refined exterior details, upgraded cabin features, and enhanced chassis tuning. For the Crown Crossover, the upper edge of the front grille, headlight surrounds, and side skirt trim pieces now come in black. The top-tier RS variant adds red brake calipers, blacked-out window trim, and a new “Neutral Black” exterior paint option. The G and Z trims are equipped with a 2.5L fifth-generation THS hybrid powertrain, combining a 186-hp 2.5L Dynamic Force naturally aspirated engine, a front electric motor (100 hp), and a rear electric motor (54.4 hp), all mated to an E-CVT transmission. This setup delivers a combined system output of 236 hp and includes E-Four electronic all-wheel drive. The high-performance RS version retains the 2.4T Hybrid MAX powertrain, featuring a 272-hp 2.4L turbocharged engine paired with a Direct Shift 6-speed automatic transmission. The Crown Sport SUV gains a full black sport package, including blacked-out side mirrors and black wheels. The RS variant features a black-finished steering wheel and offers optional all-black, two-tone, or side decal body treatments. Interior upgrades include enhanced seat bolstering, adoption of the fifth-generation THS hybrid system, and the addition of a new plug-in hybrid Z grade. The Crown Sedan receives minimal exterior changes, limited mainly to new wheel designs. Upgrades focus on functionality: improved AHS adaptive high-beam control logic, retuned suspension for better pitch suppression and ride comfort, updated seat upholstery, an optional 13.2-inch rear-seat entertainment display, and the introduction of a new entry-level G hybrid variant.
