On the evening of September 10, 2026, BMW began real-world road testing of the iX5 Hydrogen prototype. This vehicle represents the fifth powertrain variant of the BMW X5 and is expected to launch as early as 2028, though it will likely not be sold globally. BMW has set a target for the iX5 Hydrogen to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 5 seconds. By comparison, the new all-electric iX5 60 xDrive achieves this sprint in 4.6 seconds. Final output figures for power and torque of the fuel cell version have not yet been disclosed. The vehicle features BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, with one electric motor driving each axle. The iX5 Hydrogen aims for a WLTP-rated range of 750 km on a full tank of hydrogen. In contrast, the battery-electric iX5 60 xDrive, equipped with a 141 kWh battery, boasts a maximum claimed WLTP range of 845 km. Refueling the hydrogen tank is expected to take less than five minutes once depleted.
