Tesla Cybertruck’s Powershare Feature Now Supports Integration with Powerwall 3

On September 11, Tesla announced that the Powershare backup/export power feature of its Cybertruck now supports integration with the Powerwall 3 solar energy storage system to provide households with backup electricity. When operating together, the two systems can extend a home’s backup power duration by more than three days. Tesla introduced the Powershare feature alongside the Cybertruck in late 2023, enabling users to supply stored electricity from the pickup truck to their homes. Previously, this feature had limitations: if a household already had a Powerwall energy storage system installed, it could not simultaneously use both the Cybertruck and Powerwall for home backup or external power output—only one option was available at a time. In October 2024, Tesla announced plans to introduce Powerwall compatibility for Cybertruck’s Powershare feature in 2025. However, the rollout of this functionality was delayed by one year. According to Wes Morrill, Chief Engineer of Cybertruck, the delay stemmed from the complexity of system engineering. Both Cybertruck and Powerwall are grid-forming devices that must safely coordinate power delivery without network connectivity. The development also involved ensuring compatibility between different hardware generations and completing grid safety certifications, which took longer than initially anticipated. Currently, Powerwall 3 and Cybertruck can operate as an integrated system: Powerwall 3 handles household energy storage and power supply, while Cybertruck provides additional electricity storage capacity.
