Toyota Files Patent for Transmission Control

Toyota has recently filed a new patent for transmission control technology. According to the patent, when a driver uses paddle shifters to request a downshift but the engine speed is too high for immediate execution, the system will retain the request and automatically complete the downshift once the vehicle decelerates to a safe condition. The patent documentation states that the system can dynamically adjust the conditions permitting a downshift based on the vehicle's deceleration status; during emergency braking, when vehicle speed drops rapidly, the system anticipates further speed reduction before gear engagement completes, thereby expanding the allowable engine speed range for executing the downshift. The patent also optimizes the automatic upshift control logic, enabling it to suppress automatic upshifts in specific scenarios to maintain the current gear. Currently, the GR Corolla is offered with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed GR-DAT automatic transmission. The GR-DAT was introduced in the Japanese market in March 2025 alongside the updated GR Corolla, featuring a system that analyzes accelerator and brake inputs along with vehicle dynamics to determine driver intent and select gears accordingly. Toyota has not specified which models will adopt this patented technology or its production timeline, nor has it confirmed whether the technology will be implemented in the GR-DAT transmission.
