Recently, the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations released a video showcasing a Chinese car capable of lateral driving. The technology, Chery's Flying Fish intelligent driving unit, made its first public appearance on October 20 at the 2026 Chery Global Innovation Conference. The core of the technology is a 4-in-1 intelligent driving unit that integrates four major modules at the wheel end: EMB electromechanical braking, in-wheel motors, four-wheel independent kingpin steering, and active suspension. Each of the four wheels can independently control its steering angle, with a maximum wheel-end steering angle of 90 degrees, supporting scenarios such as lateral driving, tire-friendly原地 U-turns, V-shaped road passage, concentric circle driving, high-speed parking, and single-wheel escape from difficulty. In crab-walk mode, all four wheels deflect in the same direction, allowing the vehicle to slide laterally into a parking space. Chery officially stated that the technology will be applied to production models in the Exeed Sterra series in the future. The current Sterra ET is equipped with the Flying Fish chassis 2.0. The Sterra ET is a mid-to-large SUV in the Exeed brand's Sterra lineup, measuring 4,955 mm in length, 1,975 mm in width, and 1,698 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm, 3.45 cubic meters of effective cabin space, and a space utilization rate of approximately 78%. It starts at 189,800 yuan and offers both extended-range and pure electric powertrains. The vehicle features a front double-wishbone plus rear five-link independent suspension, with higher-trim models equipped as standard with air suspension and a CDC electromagnetic damping shock absorption system. The all-aluminum chassis reduces the vehicle's weight by 60 kilograms. The extended-range version is powered by a 1.5T engine dedicated to range extension, with a thermal efficiency of 44.5%, a combined system power of 195 kW, a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.8 seconds, a CLTC pure electric range of 265 kilometers, and fuel consumption of 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers when the battery is depleted. The pure electric version is built on the E0X technology platform, with a CLTC range of 540 to 760 kilometers, and some models support 800V high-voltage fast charging. The Flying Fish intelligent driving unit is expected to be gradually equipped on subsequent models.
