Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly recently stated that the government plans to reclaim "hundreds of millions of dollars" in subsidies from Stellantis and General Motors due to their decisions to scale back production operations in Canada. Earlier this decade, Canada provided Stellantis with over CAD 1 billion (approximately USD 731 million) to upgrade its Brampton, Ontario plant and sustain local production. However, Stellantis announced in November last year that it would shift production of the Jeep Compass to Illinois, USA—a move that sparked discontent in Canada. Since November, the Canadian government has been in negotiations with Stellantis, and further details will be disclosed in the coming days.
