On February 18, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved Tesla’s use of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology on its CyberCab for precise positioning in wireless charging systems. The system enables point-to-point communication between UWB transceivers installed on the vehicle and the ground-based charging pad to guide the car into the optimal charging position. In operation, the vehicle first identifies the charging pad via Bluetooth; as it approaches, UWB activates for precise positioning, and wireless charging begins only after proper alignment is confirmed. Tesla emphasized that UWB signals are activated briefly and only when the vehicle is in close proximity, and that the car’s body effectively shields these signals to prevent interference with other devices. Although wireless charging technology has now received regulatory approval, real-world footage shows CyberCab prototypes still using Tesla Superchargers, indicating the vehicle will support both charging methods. Initial production models are expected to be compatible with both wireless charging and Tesla’s existing Supercharger network.
