Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra recently stated that as Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving technology gradually becomes mainstream, memory demand per vehicle will exceed 300 GB—far surpassing the current average of around 16 GB in mainstream models. This projection stems from the significantly increased computing power and data processing requirements of autonomous driving systems. Micron’s latest financial report shows that second-quarter revenue for fiscal year 2026 reached $23.86 billion, a 200% year-over-year increase, primarily driven by surging demand for HBM chips in AI applications. To address tight supply-demand conditions, Micron plans to boost capacity by 20% in 2026 and is constructing new fabrication plants in Japan, Singapore, and the United States, with production expected to begin between 2028 and 2029. Meanwhile, NVIDIA has already partnered with automakers such as BYD and Geely to advance its Drive Hyperion platform tailored for L4 autonomous driving, underscoring the growing demand for high-speed memory. However, widespread adoption of L4 autonomous driving still faces hurdles due to high costs and incomplete regulatory frameworks, meaning large-scale deployment will take time.
