Mercedes-Benz’s all-electric flagship sedan, the EQS, is set to receive its second facelift, bringing several key technological upgrades. According to IT Home on April 3, the EQS has seen lukewarm market reception and underwhelming sales since its launch, prompting Mercedes-Benz to implement an early mid-cycle refresh in 2024. That update introduced a traditional grille, a standing star emblem, and battery enhancements to boost the vehicle’s appeal. Now, Mercedes-Benz is actively advancing an even more comprehensive redesign. The centerpiece of this new update is the introduction of a steer-by-wire system paired with a Yoke-style steering wheel. This system completely eliminates the mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the steering gear. Drivers can execute turns with minimal steering input, eliminating the need for frequent hand repositioning during cornering. Without mechanical linkages, road vibrations are no longer transmitted to the steering wheel. Mercedes-Benz emphasizes that despite being fully electronic, the system still delivers precise and natural steering feedback. To ensure safety, the steer-by-wire system has undergone over one million kilometers of real-world road testing and features dual-channel and other redundant designs, guaranteeing steering functionality even under extreme conditions. Notably, this system will be offered as an optional extra rather than standard across all trims. Complementing the steer-by-wire technology, the updated EQS will come standard with a Yoke-shaped steering wheel. This flat-bottomed, unconventional design not only frees up additional legroom but also provides a clearer view of the instrument cluster and improves ease of entry and exit. However, due to its unique structure, Mercedes-Benz has had to develop a new airbag system specifically for this steering wheel. Inside, the overall cabin layout remains largely unchanged, but the infotainment system will be upgraded with an optimized interface and refined user logic. It is also expected to feature the latest-generation Mercedes-Benz operating system, which debuted on the new CLA. Exterior updates include redesigned front headlights incorporating star-shaped elements, along with subtle refinements to the front grille and bumper, further enhancing brand recognition. On the electric powertrain front, the refreshed EQS is expected to adopt an 800V high-voltage electrical architecture, significantly reducing charging times. The vehicle may also be equipped with next-generation high-energy-density batteries and more efficient electric motors to further extend range and improve energy efficiency. This second facelift underscores Mercedes-Benz’s accelerated push toward intelligent and electric mobility and demonstrates its continued commitment to competing aggressively in the premium EV segment.
