BMW’s vehicle manufacturing plant in Munich—the brand’s oldest factory worldwide—will exclusively produce fully electric vehicles starting in 2027. The plant began pre-series production of the all-electric BMW i3 sedan in February 2024 and plans to commence customer-oriented series production in August 2024, followed by full-scale volume production in August 2026. The i3 is the second model in BMW’s “Neue Klasse” (New Class) lineup of fully electric vehicles; the first is the compact iX3 SUV, produced at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary. In addition to the i3 sedan, the upcoming i3 Touring variant will also be manufactured at the Munich facility. Over the past two years, BMW has invested more than €650 million to upgrade and modernize the plant, enhancing its efficiency, flexibility, and digital capabilities to better meet the demands of electric vehicle production. According to Peter Weber, head of the Munich plant, the introduction of i3 production will further reduce the facility’s overall manufacturing costs by an additional 10% compared to current-generation models.
