Geely Auto announced that the thermal efficiency of its latest i-HEV hybrid system has reached 48.4%, a figure independently verified by Guinness World Records. The system employs AI-based algorithms to optimize energy management and is designed for i-HEV models equipped with either a 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter internal combustion engine, achieving a combined fuel consumption equivalent to 105 miles per gallon (approximately 2.24 liters per 100 kilometers). Thermal efficiency measures the proportion of fuel energy converted into useful power. Previously, the highest thermal efficiency among mass-produced engines was around 42%, including Nissan’s e-Power and Toyota’s Dynamic Force hybrid systems; conventional internal combustion engine vehicles typically achieve thermal efficiencies between 25% and 35%. Geely’s newly announced figure approaches the thermal efficiency of Formula 1 racing engines, which exceeds 50%.
