Subaru held a press conference during an endurance race at Fuji Speedway to announce that it will equip three new models with manual transmissions. Chief Technology Officer Tetsuro Fujitsuna stated that Subaru's goal is to "create cars that make driving enjoyment more accessible." The first model is a new derivative of the WRX, featuring the TY85 manual transmission carried over from previous STI models. Its design draws inspiration from the WRX STI Sport# prototype unveiled earlier this year, though it remains unclear whether a full-fledged WRX STI variant will be launched. The second model is a new BRZ derivative, succeeding last year’s limited-edition STI Sport Type RA (Record Attempt), which was offered exclusively in Japan with only 300 units sold via lottery. The new BRZ variant will prioritize weight reduction and driving engagement over increased power output, suggesting it may not receive a more powerful engine. The third model is an affordable, entry-level manual hatchback. To keep costs down, Subaru is reevaluating materials and simplifying standard equipment across the vehicle. It is currently uncertain whether this model is linked to the Performance-B STI concept shown at last year’s Japan Mobility Show—a high-performance hatchback styled after the WRX STI. The upcoming production version could be an entirely new development focused on affordability. All three models are scheduled for phased launches by the end of next year. Subaru has already established a dedicated Sports Vehicle Planning Office to oversee such projects. Earlier this year, the company also showcased a rally-inspired BRZ with all-wheel drive and a turbocharged engine, but has not confirmed whether a road-going production version will follow. For now, all three new manual-transmission models are expected to be sold exclusively in the Japanese market, including a BRZ Rally-spec variant developed specifically for the All-Japan Rally Championship.
