2026-06-12 14:39:09Toyota is developing a new lightweight mid-engine sports car, with prototypes recently driven by media outlets. The model is expected to launch in 2028 and could be named either MR2 or Celica. The project is personally led by Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, with its development philosophy heavily influenced by motorsport and sharing technical links with the GR Yaris high-performance hatchback program. The car is seen as the spiritual successor to the third-generation MR2, which ceased production in 2006. Test drive feedback indicates that its handling emphasizes "controllable fun" even more than the GR Yaris: the mid-engine layout combined with chassis tuning reduces understeer, enhances turn-in agility, and delivers livelier rear-end dynamics. Meanwhile, its longer wheelbase aids in correcting slides, heightening driver engagement. For powertrain, the track-focused Concept M version features an engine codenamed G20E, producing up to 500 horsepower. The production model will use a new engine that is more powerful, more efficient, and 10% more compact than the current GR86’s 2.4-liter turbocharged unit (which produces 234 hp). The car is expected to be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and may adopt an all-wheel-drive layout. Toyota’s internal testing suggests that combining a mid-mounted engine with all-wheel drive better meets the demands of high-performance driving. The body structure is expected to utilize a mix of high-strength steel and aluminum alloys.
