Ford Motor Company has unveiled its new Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, with plans to launch its first midsize, four-door electric pickup truck based on this architecture in 2027, starting at approximately $30,000. The platform is focused on compact, cost-effective vehicles, aiming to strengthen Ford’s competitiveness in the market. The UEV platform achieves a 20% to 30% improvement in energy efficiency through optimized aerodynamics and the use of smaller, more efficient batteries. Its aerodynamics development team, based in California, comprises over half of its members from Formula 1 (F1). Ford refers to this group as its “Skunk Works” and states that their work delivers 15% better aerodynamic efficiency than current gasoline-powered pickups—translating to roughly 80 additional kilometers of range with the same battery pack and up to a 30% gain in highway energy efficiency. The new vehicle will utilize prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries to reduce costs and free up more cabin space. Ford’s U.S.-based production of these batteries relies on licensed technology from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL). Passenger space inside the cabin exceeds that of the Toyota RAV4, not even counting the front trunk (frunk) or cargo bed volume. In manufacturing, Ford will employ gigacasting technology, reducing the number of parts required for the current Maverick pickup—from 146 down to just two. Prototypes of the electric pickup are already undergoing public road testing in Long Beach, California, with camouflaged test vehicles featuring QR codes linking directly to a webpage introducing the UEV platform. Regarding the European market, Ford has not yet confirmed whether it will introduce UEV-based models. However, CEO Jim Farley hinted at the possibility, suggesting that if pursued through a partnership with Renault, such vehicles could arrive after 2028. Until then, Ford will leverage its existing collaborations with Volkswagen and Renault to reduce costs and accelerate product launches. Market data shows that in May 2024, BYD registered over 26,000 new vehicles in Europe, a 158% year-over-year increase, while Ford registered 18,105 units—a 32% decline. BYD surpassed Ford in global sales volume in 2023. Its latest Blade Battery 2.0, paired with an ultra-fast charging system, supports up to 600 km of WLTP-rated range and can be charged in just 10 minutes.
