This cell is currently the tallest and highest-capacity 46-series battery in mass production worldwide, featuring an energy density of 310 Wh/kg. Its usable capacity per cell is nearly 30% higher than that of the 4695 cells used in the BMW iX3. The 46120 cells will debut in BMW’s new all-electric model, the iX5. Compared with industry-standard 4680 and 4695 cells, the 46120 offers higher single-cell capacity while reducing the number of components in the battery pack, enhancing system integration efficiency, and freeing up additional interior space—addressing the demands of premium SUVs for extended range, performance, and cabin roominess. The fifth-generation all-electric BMW X5 features a 141.0 kWh battery pack and an all-wheel-drive system, delivering a maximum output of 578 horsepower and peak torque of approximately 804 N·m. In the U.S. market, it achieves a maximum range of around 700 kilometers. Its battery adopts a new structural design, using the same cell chemistry as the recently launched iX3 but with larger dimensions, resulting in a 30% increase in usable capacity.
