LFP Sector to See High Growth and Structural Shortages in 2026

In the first half of 2026, China’s total output of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) reached 2.7289 million metric tons, a year-over-year increase of 61.5%. Industry analysts project that annual production will exceed 6.2 million tons. Global lithium battery demand is expected to reach 3,065 GWh in 2026, up more than 30% year-over-year, with energy storage applications poised to surpass new energy vehicles as the primary growth driver, further boosting LFP demand. Leading producers such as Hunan YuNeng and Dynanano are operating at full capacity with order books fully booked. Some manufacturers anticipate that Q3 supply demand will rise approximately 30% quarter-over-quarter compared to Q2. July’s supply demand increased by 8% month-over-month, and further increases of around 10% are expected in both August and September, signaling an early start to the traditional peak season known as “Golden September, Silver October.” Product segmentation is becoming evident: standard-grade LFP is abundantly supplied, while high-end, high-density LFP products—designed for high-cycle energy storage and high-rate power applications—are in short supply. Market leaders are leveraging their technological and capacity advantages to dominate the market. On pricing, LFP prices in early July rose by over 80% from the low point recorded in June 2025. Due to rising raw material costs and tight capacity, Hunan YuNeng announced on July 15 that it would raise prices across its entire product line by RMB 2,000 per ton effective August 1. On July 17, the company further disclosed plans to invest RMB 24 billion in Wengan County, Guizhou Province, to build an integrated mining-and-manufacturing circular industrial project for new energy battery materials. The industry continues to face structural supply shortages. If production exceeds 3.5 million tons in the second half of 2026, it would represent a quarter-over-quarter increase of over 28%. Although new entrants and smaller players report high nominal capacities, their actual effective output remains limited, and the gap in qualified high-end capacity is expected to persist throughout the remainder of the year.
