Volvo Cars recently released a video of an extreme crash test, in which Yuan Xiaolin, President of Volvo Cars Asia Pacific, personally participated in rigorous safety testing of the XC70 electric model under minus 20°C conditions. A stationary XC70 was struck successively by a solid ice block weighing 6.5 tons traveling at 60 km/h from the side, left-rear, and rear directions. Test results showed that the vehicle’s B-pillar structure remained intact, the passenger cabin experienced no intrusion, all airbags deployed normally, the battery pack did not catch fire, and the onboard emergency response system activated immediately. After the test, Yuan Xiaolin himself drove the damaged vehicle to the center of the test site to demonstrate its reliability. This test builds upon the 2021 XC60 stack-crush test that validated body rigidity, now adding a new dimension focused on battery safety. According to the company, the XC70 features a boron steel-reinforced cage-like body structure combined with multi-stage energy-absorbing design, ensuring both passenger compartment integrity and battery protection. On February 23, Volvo will release an “ultimate teardown” video to further reveal its safety engineering.
