A Rivian R1S owner discovered while charging at a Buc-ee’s location that the site’s Tesla chargers were equipped with a device called the “Magic Dock,” which converts Tesla’s NACS connector to a CCS connector, enabling compatibility with non-Tesla electric vehicles. In a video demonstration, the owner showed that by pressing and holding the button on the charging handle for several seconds, an integrated CCS adapter could be pulled directly out of the charging terminal—allowing immediate charging of the Rivian without needing to carry a separate adapter. Currently, most non-Tesla EVs produced before 2026 use the CCS connector, while Tesla uses the NACS standard. Although the industry has agreed to adopt NACS as the universal standard starting in 2026, many EVs today still require an adapter to use Tesla Superchargers. Some Tesla Supercharger stations—particularly newer models—have already installed Magic Docks that automatically provide CCS adapter functionality. It is reported that at least 3,500 such chargers are now deployed across the U.S., though not all locations feature this capability; older charger models typically lack the Magic Dock. As a result, EV drivers traveling long distances still need to plan their routes in advance or carry their own adapters.
