Japanese automakers are facing an aluminum supply crisis, with inventories potentially running out by May. Imports of aluminum from the Middle East have been disrupted due to supply chain interruptions linked to the conflict involving Iran. Japan relies on the region for approximately 70% of its aluminum imports, significantly impacting companies such as Toyota Motor and Denso. Since the conflict escalated in late February, aluminum prices have risen by about 13%, driving up costs for critical components like engine parts and wheels. Industry executives say current supply constraints are already influencing production and operational decisions, and if shipping routes remain obstructed, the shortage could worsen further.
