Since its debut in 1979 as Volkswagen’s compact sedan, the Jetta has gone through seven generations. In 2019, Volkswagen Group partnered with FAW Group to spin off Jetta as an independent sub-brand focused exclusively on the Chinese market, initially offering internal combustion engine vehicles. Starting in 2026, Jetta will operate as a fully independent entity and shift entirely toward new energy vehicles (NEVs), including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs). Following Škoda’s exit from the Chinese market due to declining sales, Jetta has taken over as Volkswagen Group’s entry-level brand in China. The brand plans to launch four NEV models by 2028, including an all-electric SUV—the Jetta X. The Jetta X made its global debut ahead of the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, featuring a new design language called “Modern Robust,” characterized by a boxy silhouette and short front and rear overhangs, suggesting it is built on a dedicated EV platform. Inside, the Jetta X features a large central touchscreen and a passenger-side display, emphasizing an intelligent cockpit with advanced voice control capabilities and retaining only a minimal number of physical buttons. Notably, the vehicle bears no Volkswagen branding anywhere inside or out, underscoring its identity as a standalone brand. Compared to previous Jetta models sold in China, this concept car demonstrates a significant upgrade in overall quality and refinement. Jetta’s first next-generation model will launch in the second half of 2026, followed by three additional NEVs within the subsequent three years. All models will be sold exclusively in the Chinese market.
