Toyota Motor Corporation plans to build three new vehicle assembly plants in Maharashtra, western India, with a total investment of approximately ¥300 billion (around RMB 13.038 billion). The first plant is expected to begin production in 2029, followed by the other two plants entering operation sequentially during the 2030s. Upon completion of the project, Toyota will operate six vehicle plants in India, with annual production capacity exceeding one million units, making India its fourth-largest manufacturing base after Japan, China, and the United States. Currently, Toyota operates three plants in southern India, primarily serving the domestic market. The new facilities will cater to both India’s domestic demand and export requirements, focusing on emerging markets such as the Middle East and Africa. To support this capacity expansion, Toyota plans to launch 15 new or updated models in India, including a three-row SUV based on the Corolla platform tailored for emerging markets, and will ramp up production of plug-in hybrid vehicles. The company aims to increase its passenger vehicle market share in India from the current level of around 8% to 10%. India is currently the world’s third-largest new vehicle market. Forecasts predict that the country’s new vehicle sales will reach 6.44 million units by 2030, a 20% increase from 2025 levels. Meanwhile, UN data indicates that Africa’s population is projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, the Middle East’s population will grow to 700 million, and India’s population is expected to surpass 1.7 billion.
