Recently, a dangerous driving incident occurred on the Shanghai–Changzhou Expressway. The driver of a moving vehicle was seen with both hands off the steering wheel and his head noticeably tilted, apparently asleep. The front-seat passenger exhibited a similar posture. This behavior, occurring on a highway, poses a serious safety hazard. Currently, the intelligent driver-assistance systems installed in vehicles available on the market are classified as Level 2 driving automation, which requires drivers to continuously monitor road conditions and be ready to take control of the vehicle at any moment. Relevant traffic regulations explicitly prohibit drivers from sleeping, using mobile phones, applying makeup, eating, or engaging in any other activities that distract attention while the vehicle is in motion. The purpose of driver-assistance features is to alleviate driver fatigue and enhance driving safety—not to replace human operation.
