BYD plans to launch multiple models specifically designed and developed for the European market over the next three years. The first of these will be the plug-in hybrid "Dolphin G," scheduled for an official debut in June 2024 and a public premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK in July. Positioned as the gasoline-powered alternative to the Dolphin Surf (the European counterpart of China’s Seagull), the Dolphin G will become the smallest plug-in hybrid vehicle available in the UK market. Li Ke, Executive Vice President of BYD, stated that the Dolphin G is the company’s first product tailored exclusively for European consumers, as there is little interest in this type of vehicle in the Chinese market. She added that future models will be designed according to European aesthetic preferences and usage requirements, with development also taking place in Europe. Li noted that vehicles in China are trending toward larger dimensions and wider wheelbases—a trend unsuitable for European urban environments—and emphasized that certain models destined for Europe must not exceed 4.3 meters in length. Additionally, BYD’s new factory in Hungary is in the final stages of construction and is expected to begin production later this year. Initially, it will produce the Dolphin Surf and Atto 2 models, with the Dolphin G also likely to be included in its production lineup. The company stressed that it will no longer simply introduce Chinese-market versions into Europe but will instead develop dedicated models that meet local standards specifically for the European market.
