Citroën has announced that its iconic 2CV model will return as a fully electric vehicle—36 years after production ceased—with an official debut scheduled for the Paris Motor Show in October 2026. Originally produced from 1949 to 1990, the first-generation 2CV sold over 5 million units and was renowned for its simple construction, low price, and distinctive character. The new 2CV is part of Stellantis Group’s plan to launch 110 new models by 2030 and will retain the original’s retro design language, with body contours paying homage to the classic “Deux Chevaux.” Replacing the original air-cooled twin-cylinder engine with a pure electric powertrain, the new 2CV is expected to start at €15,000, positioning it among Europe’s most affordable EVs. Production is slated to begin in Italy in 2028. The model forms part of Stellantis’ “E-Car” strategy, which aims to develop low-cost, compact electric vehicles to leverage the EU’s “super credits” policy for M1E-class small EVs—where each vehicle counts as 1.3 units toward fleet emissions targets—thereby reducing overall carbon emissions. Citroën stated that the new 2CV will uphold its core principles of affordability, lightweight design, practicality, versatility, and unique personality, fulfilling the brand’s original mission of “making mobility accessible to everyone” through electrification.
