2025 BMW M5 Touring Spy Shots: Major Exterior and Interior Updates, Retains Plug-in Hybrid V8

A mid-cycle refresh prototype of the BMW M5 Touring was recently spotted lapping the Nürburgring. Despite being fully camouflaged, it has been confirmed as an update to the current G99 model rather than an all-new generation. The front fascia has been redesigned with elements from BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, featuring sharper headlight contours, a slightly smaller kidney grille, and a more aggressive, angular front bumper. The side profile remains largely unchanged, with only updated wheel designs and color options. A charging port flap on the front fender confirms that the refreshed model will retain its plug-in hybrid powertrain. At the rear, the taillight outline is visible through the camouflage, abandoning the current dual-segment design in favor of a style closer to that of the new BMW i3 sedan. The rear bumper is expected to receive minor tweaks but will keep the quad-exhaust layout—a design reserved exclusively for high-performance variants and genuine M models going forward. The exhaust note sounds noticeably deeper and more spirited than the current model, possibly due to revised tuning of the S68 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine or because the test car lacks the gasoline particulate filter (GPF) standard on European-market vehicles. Due to Euro 7 emissions regulations, the engine’s output in Europe has been reduced by 41 hp; however, this loss is offset by the electric motor, maintaining a combined system output of 717 hp. Overseas markets will retain the original power specifications. Inside, the cabin receives a comprehensive overhaul: the traditional mechanical iDrive controller is eliminated in favor of BMW’s latest infotainment system, and a full-width windshield head-up display comes standard. It remains unclear whether a passenger-side entertainment screen will be offered; if available, it is expected to be an optional extra. The refreshed M5 Touring is slated for an official debut next year, likely around the same time as—or slightly after—the standard 5 Series mid-cycle update.
