On May 31, a video was released showing Tesla’s Cybercab autonomous taxi driving itself out of the Texas Gigafactory. In the footage, a gold-painted Cybercab followed road signs, executed turns, and merged into factory traffic—all without any human intervention. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s Director of Artificial Intelligence, stated that the Cybercab is set to launch commercial operations in downtown Austin soon. The vehicle has already entered mass production, with large numbers parked at the Texas Gigafactory awaiting deployment. Tesla is simultaneously expanding its driverless ride-hailing service—without safety drivers—to Dallas and Houston. Under Texas’s latest autonomous vehicle regulations, Tesla has completed self-certification confirming that its Full Self-Driving system meets SAE Level 4 standards, allowing local deployment without federal approval. Austin will be the first city where Tesla launches its commercial autonomous ride-hailing service.
