Toyota’s long-dominant hybrid technology is now facing challenges from lithium battery-based approaches. Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive (THS) system relies on a complex power-split architecture to achieve its advantages in fuel efficiency and reliability. However, rival systems such as Honda’s i-MMD and Nissan’s e-POWER, which utilize high-performance lithium batteries, can cover a wide range of driving conditions through simpler series-parallel configurations, thereby eroding Toyota’s technological edge. Chinese automakers are accelerating their expansion into the HEV (hybrid electric vehicle) segment. Companies like Chery and GAC have already launched hybrid models equipped with large-capacity batteries, enabling features such as air conditioning and seat massage functions even when the engine is off. Meanwhile, battery manufacturers including Sunwoda, SVOLT, and EVE Energy are advancing a technical pathway combining large cylindrical cells with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry to reduce HEV battery costs. Market data shows that from January to April 2026, overall passenger vehicle sales in China declined by 6.1% year-over-year, while new energy vehicle (NEV) sales fell by 1%. In contrast, HEV sales grew by 4.5%, making HEVs the only powertrain type achieving positive growth during this period. According to the “Energy Conservation and New Energy Vehicle Technology Roadmap 3.0,” HEVs are projected to account for 24% of China’s passenger vehicle market by 2030, translating to annual sales of approximately 6 million units. Additionally, the “Evaluation Methods and Indicators for Passenger Vehicle Fuel Consumption” mandates that corporate average fuel consumption be reduced to 3.3 L/100 km by 2030—a roughly 48% tightening compared to previous standards—further accelerating the industry’s shift toward HEVs.
