Toyota Scraps Lexus LF-ZC EV Production Plans

Toyota has confirmed it is halting the mass-production development of the Lexus LF-ZC all-electric vehicle. The prototype was first unveiled in October 2023 and had been scheduled for a mid-2027 market launch, but Toyota has now clearly stated that the model will not enter production. The company explained that this adjustment reflects an optimization of its overall vehicle development portfolio in response to shifting market demand, and emphasized that it remains committed to the development, production, and sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The premium EV segment has recently shown weak overall performance. Tesla has discontinued its earlier high-end models, the Model S and Model X, with current sales largely driven by the Model 3 and Model Y. Ferrari’s first all-electric vehicle, the Luce, received negative reviews following its launch, leading to a drop in its stock price. Early BEV offerings from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi have also generally underperformed in terms of sales. Market analysts note that today’s electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles priced at RMB 1–2 million commonly offer acceleration times of 3–5 seconds, all-wheel drive, and larger body dimensions—features that diminish the perceived advantages of higher-priced BEVs costing RMB 3–4 million or more in terms of space, performance, and equipment, making their premium pricing difficult to justify. Currently, the premium automotive market remains predominantly dominated by internal combustion engine vehicles.
