As the world’s largest hub for small commodities, Yiwu has built a system enabling micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to participate in global trade at low cost and high efficiency. This system leverages institutional innovation, market platforms, logistics networks, digital tools, and public services. The Yiwu model offers valuable insights for China’s automotive and auto parts industry, which is currently entering a new phase of international expansion. China’s auto parts sector boasts a solid industrial foundation and a vast number of enterprises, with mature industrial clusters already established in the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, and Shandong Province. However, automakers and their supply chains now face new challenges in going global: relying solely on products, pricing, and traditional export methods is no longer sufficient to meet the demands of niche segments such as aftermarket parts, modification components, small-batch OEM orders, and long-tail spare parts. These categories are characterized by high SKU counts, small order volumes, geographically dispersed customers, and stringent delivery-time requirements—necessitating lower transaction barriers, improved fulfillment efficiency, and stronger customer retention. The Yiwu experience suggests several pathways to optimize the overseas expansion of auto parts: 1. **Advance institutional innovation**: Pilot the “market procurement trade” model (Mode 1039) in industrial clusters to enable consolidated container loading, unified customs clearance, and accelerated tax rebates. 2. **Upgrade the “storefront-factory” model**: Establish international procurement centers and online platforms at the front end; enhance midstream public services such as certification, finance, and legal support; and strengthen regional collaborative manufacturing capabilities at the back end. 3. **Accelerate digital adoption**: Deploy multilingual marketing content, AI-powered quality inspection, flexible production scheduling, and other digital tools to boost customer acquisition and production efficiency. 4. **Build global logistics infrastructure**: Develop dedicated LCL (less-than-container-load) consolidation centers for auto parts and expand overseas warehouse networks to enable localized delivery. 5. **Leverage government support**: Create public platforms addressing real pain points for businesses, offering services in compliance certification, intellectual property protection, and overseas market research. 6. **Strengthen chambers of commerce and platform organizations**: Integrate fragmented resources to build cohesive industry-wide capabilities. It should be noted that not all auto parts categories are suited to this model. Aftermarket parts, modification components, and small-batch OEM products targeting emerging markets are better aligned with Yiwu’s asset-light, fast-turnover, and highly collaborative approach. In contrast, high-end critical components—such as electric powertrains (the “three electric systems”), automotive-grade chips, and core intelligent driving parts—still require a strategy centered on in-house R&D, rigorous certification, and localized manufacturing. Overall, China’s auto parts industry should build upon its existing export strengths by selectively integrating Yiwu’s systemic organizational capabilities into suitable segments, thereby transitioning from simple product exports to a more comprehensive, system-driven global expansion.
