Ford Considers Reentering Sedan Market Under Mustang Nameplate—If Costs Make Sense

Ford is evaluating the possibility of re-entering the U.S. sedan market, with a potential new vehicle possibly joining the Mustang family. The automaker has not sold sedans in the U.S. for several years, focusing instead on SUVs and pickup trucks. Andrew Frick, President of Ford’s Blue and Model e divisions, noted that although the sedan segment’s market share has declined from around 50% in the past to roughly 16–17%, there remains some consumer demand. He emphasized that any new sedan would need to align logically with Ford’s existing product lineup and demonstrate strong cost efficiency. Ford previously used the Mustang nameplate on the Mach-E electric crossover. Details about the powertrain of a future sedan—whether it would be fully electric or derived from the current gasoline-powered Mustang—remain unclear. It also hasn’t been disclosed whether such a model would retain the V8 engine and manual transmission. In 2024, Ford showed dealers two Mustang concept vehicles: a four-door coupe and an all-wheel-drive off-road variant. Further speculation was sparked in 2025 by Ford’s trademark application for “Mach 4.” Frick also stressed that Ford does not regret its earlier exit from the sedan market, stating that the move allowed the company to concentrate resources on launching successful models like the Bronco, Bronco Sport, Maverick, Tremor, and Raptor.
