In May 2024, China's passenger vehicle market continued to diverge. Sales of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles reached 650,000 units, down 8.4% month-over-month and 37.5% year-over-year. Cumulative ICE vehicle sales for the first five months of 2024 totaled 4.177 million units, a 24.1% decline compared to the same period last year. Although ICE vehicles still account for roughly 50% of the market share, their overall performance remains weak. Social media platforms and short video content have been flooded with claims of ICE vehicles being sold at "cabbage prices" or in "clearance sales," suggesting that mid-size sedans from joint ventures or second-tier luxury brands can now be purchased for just over RMB 100,000. For instance, the locally produced Land Rover Evoque is reportedly available at dealerships for around RMB 170,000—a claim largely verified by on-site investigations from online influencers. However, such steep discounts do not apply universally across all brands and models. Visits to numerous 4S dealerships nationwide revealed that many of the so-called “rock-bottom prices” circulating online are isolated cases tied to specific conditions and are not representative of the broader market. For example, the Volkswagen Magotan’s advertised starting price of RMB 125,800 requires combining trade-in subsidies with financing—and applies only to older, low-trim variants that are not among the model’s best-sellers. Paying in full for a new Magotan yields a discount of only about RMB 30,000, with mainstream trims still costing over RMB 160,000 after all fees. Similarly, Japanese mid-size sedans have not dropped into the RMB 100,000+ range: - The Nissan Teana 2.0L Ultra Comfort Edition carries a fixed price of RMB 139,900, translating to an on-road price of approximately RMB 160,000. - The Toyota Camry Hybrid 2.0L Elite Edition, even after discounts, has an on-road price exceeding RMB 150,000. - The Toyota Asia Dragon Hybrid 2.0L Luxury Edition, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of RMB 216,800, still costs more than the Camry after discounts exceeding RMB 60,000. - The Honda Accord 1.5T Luxury Edition, despite a RMB 55,000 discount, remains around RMB 160,000 on the road. Analysts note that current price cuts for ICE vehicles are primarily concentrated on slow-moving inventory, older models, base trims, or less popular configurations—aimed at clearing stock and optimizing product portfolios rather than offering broad-based discounts. Prices for mainstream mid-to-high trim models remain relatively stable. Additionally, while local government trade-in incentives and favorable financing policies may lower entry barriers, actual out-the-door costs are influenced by multiple factors. Industry experts caution that online narratives of a “price collapse” or “market crash” significantly exaggerate reality, leading consumers to misjudge actual market conditions. Without a clear need for a new vehicle, buyers should avoid being swayed by sensationalized discourse into making impulsive purchases. Rational decision-making should focus on the product itself, incorporating verified dealer pricing and individual needs for a balanced assessment.
