Honda Partners with U.S. QuantumScape to Develop Solid-State Batteries

On June 19, Honda and U.S. battery startup QuantumScape announced a partnership to jointly develop solid-state batteries for use in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and other applications. The two companies have signed a multi-year joint research agreement focused on advancing the development of solid-state batteries and their manufacturing processes. Honda had previously been quietly evaluating QuantumScape’s technology for an extended period and has now decided to move into a public collaboration phase. Solid-state batteries replace conventional liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes, theoretically offering higher safety, faster charging speeds, and greater energy density. Despite significant commercialization challenges, QuantumScape this year began pilot production of lithium-metal cells on its fully automated production line in San Jose. The company plans to license its intellectual property and manufacturing know-how to automakers rather than directly supplying batteries. Although Honda recently paused development of several next-generation BEV models, it continues to view electrification as a core long-term strategic direction. In 2024, Honda stated that its solid-state batteries could reduce volume by 50%, weight by 35%, and manufacturing costs by 25% compared to current cells, enabling a single-charge driving range of approximately 1,000 kilometers. The company also forecasts that by 2040, BEVs equipped with solid-state batteries could achieve a range of around 1,250 kilometers. Previously, Honda canceled its planned “0 Series” dedicated EV platform and adjusted related product roadmaps accordingly. Volkswagen Group is also a partner and investor in QuantumScape. Meanwhile, Toyota has been developing solid-state battery technology since 2010, General Motors is currently testing solid-state cells in its labs, and Honda has maintained consistent R&D investment in this technology for many years.
