On June 24, multiple owners of BMW i3 and i4 all-electric vehicles reported receiving a warning message prompting them to replace the 12-volt auxiliary battery shortly after starting their cars. Some owners stated they received this alert despite having driven fewer than 8,000 kilometers. One i3 owner in Changsha said the warning suddenly appeared while using the vehicle early in the morning, though the car’s infotainment system indicated the vehicle could still operate normally—only advising that the battery issue be addressed as soon as possible. BMW customer service responded that the warning does not affect daily driving and recommended owners visit an authorized BMW dealership for inspection of the battery system. BMW has logged this batch-related issue and assigned a specialized team to investigate; however, the company has not yet disclosed the specific cause or a resolution. Under BMW’s current warranty policy, high-voltage traction batteries in i3 models produced from May 2022 onward and i4 models produced from November 2021 onward are covered by an 8-year or 160,000-kilometer warranty. If, within this warranty period, the battery capacity degrades below 70%, BMW will provide free repair services, guaranteeing a minimum restored capacity of 70% post-repair. Affected owners are currently awaiting further official clarification and a concrete resolution plan.
