Porsche Centre Huaian in Jiangsu Province opened in November 2022 and ceased its dealership operations at the end of June 2025, after more than three years of operation. Around the same time, Porsche Centres in Xingning, Nanning (Guangxi) and Jining (Shandong) also stopped operations on June 30, while the Porsche Centre in Wuhu, Anhui, is scheduled to terminate its sales business on July 31. Porsche China stated that this round of adjustments is part of a dealer network consolidation under its “quality over quantity” strategy. In reality, store closures are closely linked to declining foot traffic. In second- and third-tier cities like Huaian, a significant proportion of customers work in foreign trade and related businesses. Amid growing uncertainty in the external economic and trade environment, their willingness to spend has weakened. To close deals, dealers have widely resorted to price cuts, but persistently falling transaction prices have led to price inversions—manufacturer incentives no longer cover vehicle procurement costs, leaving most outlets operating at a loss for extended periods. Despite these losses, some dealers were compelled to maintain sales volumes to meet factory-mandated targets and secure rebates and resource allocations. A former store manager revealed that certain Porsche outlets incurred average losses of approximately RMB 70,000–80,000 per new car sold, trapping them in a vicious cycle of “the more they sell, the more they lose.” Luxury brand dealerships traditionally rely on four revenue streams: new-car gross margins, manufacturer rebates, financial/insurance services, and after-sales income. When new-car sales turn unprofitable and after-sales customer bases remain insufficient—especially for newly opened stores—other revenue sources struggle to offset costs, making overall operations unsustainable. As investor expectations for returns on Porsche-related businesses have significantly diminished, exiting the business has become a pragmatic choice. China was once Porsche’s largest single market globally, delivering 95,700 vehicles in 2021—nearly one-third of its global volume. By 2025, however, deliveries had dropped to around 41,900 units, down 26% year-over-year. In Q1 2026, deliveries further declined to just 7,519 units. Correspondingly, Porsche’s dealer count in China fell from 150 in 2025 to 114 and is slated to shrink further to 80 by 2026. Meidong Auto Group, a key Porsche-affiliated dealership group, has also been severely impacted: its Porsche new-car sales revenue plummeted from over RMB 10 billion in 2023 to RMB 5.229 billion in 2025. The company swung from profit to loss in 2024 and reported a net loss of RMB 755 million in 2025, with new-car sales gross margins remaining negative. Globally, Porsche’s new CEO, Michael Lohscheller, announced a strategic shift in June 2025, refocusing on its sports car core, simplifying model lineups and technology roadmaps, streamlining organizational structures to cut costs, and shifting emphasis from scale expansion to profit recovery. Meanwhile, Porsche is advancing localization of its R&D efforts. Its Shanghai R&D center has developed a China-specific infotainment system, set to debut across multiple models starting mid-2026, featuring AI-powered voice assistants, vehicle control interfaces, and integration with local digital ecosystems. However, analysts note that as Chinese consumers increasingly define luxury through intelligent cockpits, software experiences, advanced driver-assistance systems, and charging convenience, Porsche’s traditional brand equity alone can no longer justify premium pricing. Its all-electric Taycan faces even greater sales pressure in China, where buyers prioritize practicality over driving dynamics. Porsche must now redefine the value proposition that convinces Chinese consumers to pay a premium amid evolving standards for premium vehicles in the Chinese market.
